Rachel, you have a very smart mother. Certainly, a twenty percent salary reduction has got to hurt, but i think shared pain is much better than the personal devastation that some go through when they lose their jobs.

At least with most companies, the furloughed time will eventually end making it all the more likely that regular hours will resume. This way, all of the workforce is kept together minus people who left the company via attrition.

Very good post. My mother works for a company that's doing shortened work weeks and similar measures. She said to me, "If I have to work four days instead of five so someone else can keep their job, I'll do it. They need it just as much as I do." It's nice to see that corporations are starting to recognize that there are more compassionate means of saving money that just slashing the workforce.

Larry, I'm glad that executives are giving furloughing a try as it is an important way to retain key people while building for the future. We've had this rotating management mentality where new executives come in, make changes and then move on. This leaves regular workers who've been plugging away year in and year out vulnerable to the whims of the new manager who isn't there to create long term stability, rather short term profits to appease shareholders.

Maybe Corporate America is finally beginning to understand the value of long term commitment.

Good article, Matt. The small business I work for decided to go the route of reducing hours and work days for everyone, until business picked back up. No one lost their job and when business is better, the full work crew will be available to take advantage. It's a smart move and again, no one had to lose their job.
