I wasn’t all that familiar with the term “comma splice” until I looked it up. Yes, I can see where it is being used to replace the semi-colon and in ways that can be irksome.

One example of where a comma splice is used correctly is with short independent clauses such as: I came, I saw, I conquered. That “looks” fine, though I think I might still use semi-colons instead.

Alas, I’m afraid the semi-colon has been replaced by the comma splice for a great many. Today I was copying a quote of Theodore Dalrymple from the winter issue of City Journal. A semi-colon was used there before the coordinate conjunction “but.” I attribute this one to sloppy proofing, but it illustrates the confusion of many students today. Of course, either of these is preferable to not knowing when one has or has not reached the end of a sentence in order to place a period.

My favorite punctuation mark is the colon, so versatile and less frequently used.

Sam, it isn’t one of the easiest rules now is it? Its is a possessive while it’s is not. Still, I like the apostrophe as it clearly separates a possessive from a plural as in kings or king’s.

Hi neighbor, Karen! I never head of Apostrophe Abuse before. The blog, that is. I’ll have to check it out, especially when I’m annoyed too. Silly of Birmingham, isn’t it? Even their reasoning has been proven to be flawed as TomTom delivers results well before an apostrophe is needed.
