Lillie, you make a valid point why raising taxes on someone like you would be harmful. I remembered you sharing with me that you had such a business and you know first hand how damaging a tax hike can be do your bottom line.

I say this: tax small businesses and they'll get what they need no matter what. Either raise prices to customers or cut employees. Maybe both!

Matt,
For years I owned an interior landscaping company that generated income of about half a million dollars a year. Yet we struggled every week to make payroll, and I always paid my employees before I paid myself. People thought we were making lots of money—and, in fact, there was a lot of money coming in—but we were far, far from "rich." And increased taxes would have caused us to reduce the workforce (we had up to 18 employees).

Matt,

It is providential that your title included "landscaper"....

The other day I was listening to one of the local stations and it turns out that our local politicians in New Jersey, are trying to introduce a law that will require a Joe the Landscaper to have a college degree to renew his license.

When you think about it, in these difficult times, landscaping and similar jobs should be easy to turn to in order to keep some inflow of cash.

I can't even conceive the fact our governor (Mr. Corzine) is on the short list of those whom Obama will choose to replace Paulson.

I just hope that democrats in both houses will pause for a second and reevaluate their "victory".

Great analysis by the way!
