WordPress Upgrade…Oops!

Well, not really oops. I did upgrade one of the nine blogs I manage this morning thinking I had backed everything up, but then realized later that I ftp’d to another blog instead. This second blog hadn’t been backed up, but the upgrade went smoothly anyway. I guess I shouldn’t try to multi-task while doing something as important as a major WordPress upgrade. Tsk tsk on me.

When I began writing this post, I had one blog left to upgrade — the one that you are reading. I was a bit nervous doing this one thinking that there could be some glitch that would distract me from other projects I am working on today. I have an important deadline for Friday and the last thing that I needed was to be saddled with fixing a problem that shouldn’t of happened in the first place.

To shorten what is already too long of a story, I saved this post, backed up the database for this blog, and completed the upgrade. Simple. Painless. Quick.

All nine blogs have been upgraded to WordPress 2.5 and not one presented a problem. I’ve heard of a few horror stories from others who tried to upgrade and failed, but mine made it without incident. I am a bit surprised as one of the themes for a customer’s site is rather old and outdated.

One final note: I realize that this blog is featured on various “No Follow” lists which is fine with me. However, if you can’t figure a way of leaving an intelligent comment as a means of gaining some link love, then don’t expect me to keep your comment around. ‘Nuff said.

“However, if you can’t figure a way of leaving an intelligent comment as a means of gaining some link love, then don’t expect me to keep your comment around. ‘Nuff said”

This seems the sensible way to do it. Some bloggers are going back to no-follow. Some are still allowing ‘nice blog!’ style spammy comments.

You should never be afraid to use the delete button. It’s not Shakepeare, y’know!

So you are doing the upgrade, no wonder I seem to have problem loading the site a few hours ago. Keeping giving me timeout error… Now, everything just look perfect.

I’ve been reading a lot of feedbacks from WordPress users who opt to upgrade. Somehow, most are positive responses.

you upgraded 9 blogs without any problem

I am always afraid of upgrading my blog.

Do you suggest upgrade from fantastico ?

Asia’h — You must have logged on when I was doing the upgrade. I should have done it earlier in the day; I apologize for the inconvenience. Hopefully, the worst is behind us!

NM — I’m glad to to hear that. A lot of people were fearful of what the upgrade could do to their sites, but I think most fears were unfounded.

Rostyslav — I’m not familiar with Fantastico, except that it is some sort of automated updating device. WP has its own one-step update, although I have yet to use it. I like to update through my FTP client.

I haven’t made the upgrade yet. To tell you the truth, I’m a little hesitant. I’m always afraid that something will go wrong?

Laura, I was surprised that nothing bad has turned up even after upgrading nine blogs. One of the blogs uses an old theme, but it seems to be working fine.

Give it a try, but after you back everything up.

I upgraded to WP 2.5 last week. I used the wordpress automatic upgrade plugin and it made the process all the much easier. It backs up for you also. I did need to go in and reactivate plugins though.

Billy, I’m glad to hear that the one-step plug-in worked so well with you. I updated via my FTP client, but I didn’t have to do anything with the plug-ins, they stayed “on” the whole time.

I worry about that too. And wonder if my plugins will all work…

Glad to hear your upgrades went fine. I had a different experience. The blog I upgraded got messed up. The only working page was the home page! Fortunately I got it all sorted out on the WordPress support forums.

Hows the feeling of upgraded? That’s awesome because Im an upgraded wordpress user too. Don’t worry about the plugins because it all works…

  • By Matt, April 17, 2008 @ 8:11 am

Renan, all has gone well. Plugins are working although I’m trying out some new ones including CommentLuv. Let’s see hope WP does for both of us in the months ahead…best wishes!
