Giants Slap Pats & All Is Right With The World

The world today is a perfect place. Well, not really.

Following the Giants’ statement-making 17-14 win over the Patriots, my little portion of the world is filled with optimism, hope, even a sense of accomplishment.

Like so many sports fans the world over, I’m excited that my team won and won big — they’re the world champions when it comes to American football. No, the “bigness” wasn’t in the score — a tightly fought contest for all 60 minutes of playing time — rather, in the way that the underdog Giants came back from being down with just a few minutes left in the game.

For the Patriots, this was supposed to be their year. The year that they went 19-0 and would be considered the best NFL team ever. Truly, the Patriot offense is the best in the league and their quarterback, Tom Brady, one of the best who has ever thrown a pigskin. Far be it for me to diminish all that they accomplished this season.

Eli Manning, the Giants QB who always seems to be playing in the shadow of his older brother, Peyton, rose to the occasion in stunning fashion turning a sure sack into a completed pass which led to the winning score. It is this particular scene which is etched in my mind reminding me that no matter how desperate the situation, a way out is possible. Just keep plugging away.

What does this have to do with writing? Everything and nothing — I’m certainly not a football player, but I am like everyone else in this world: my back sometimes is pushed up against the wall. Quitting assures defeat while giving your all keeps open the possibility that you’ll taste victory.

Yesterday, the Giants kept plugging away which is just the encouragement I need to keep on keeping on even when things appear hopeless.

Well done the giants but what happened to New England

  • By Matt, February 4, 2008 @ 3:27 pm

Nothing happened to New England, Snes — they were just beaten by a team with a better defense.

Look at the way that the Giants won throughout the playoffs — the Big D rose to the ocassion, something no team had been able to muster to battle New England until yesterday.

Congratulations for your favourite team. I know nothing about American football (except from what I saw in the movies) so I can’t say nothing more..

Thanks, Sintra. The movies probably did not give you an accurate depiction of the sport. Football is something that has be viewed in person to begin to understand and to appreciate.

What a story. No one gave the Giants a chance and they are now part of one of the great upsets of all time.

Antique John, it’ll go down as one of the biggest games in Super Bowl history. I’m glad to be on the side of the team that won for once too!

yea it was pretty crazy that the giants won and that both the manning brothers have a superbowl ring at such a young age in their careers.

That came was the craziest game I had seen in a while. I am totally amazed that the giants won, I didn’t think they were going to pull it off.
