6 Months Of StumbleUpon Fun!!

Quite by accident, I realized this morning that today is my 6 months anniversary with StumbleUpon. Yippee, you say? Well, for me it is a big deal! Thousands of stumbles later, my websites have benefited from a nice surge in traffic, I have connected with other stumblers, and I have bookmarked at least two dozen sites found while stumbling.

What Is StumbleUpon?

I won’t repeat what has been said several times by others about this nifty tool, so I’ll let SU (the abbreviated name for Stumble Upon) describe what they are all about for themselves:

Channel surf the internet with the StumbleUpon toolbar to find great websites, videos, photos and more based on your interests. StumbleUpon learns what you like and makes better recommendations.

I have blogged about SU in the past as have DoshDosh, Rambling Traveler, Tamar Weinberg, and many others. I recommend that people read a variety of guides to get the most out of SU.

Averaging 28 Stumbles Daily With 133 Fans

StumbleUponAs the picture to the right shows (got eye strain?), I have as of this writing 5155 positive stumbles and 133 fans. Check my statistics now and those figures have likely changed. For the first few months I wasn’t that active of a stumbler, but now I am making up for lost time and reaping the benefits. I think when July is said and done I’ll match my previous five months total combined. Yes, there are days when I have stumbled 200, even 300 pages leaving plenty of reviews in my wake too.

End Of The Stumbling Road

Stumble UponThis picture shows a message I have been getting a lot lately — I have come to the end of my stumbles for a particular category, in this case Cars. At least six other categories are also showing this message, underscoring one thing: I really must get a life! Or, change my categories…

I…Must…Stumble…

Let’s face it — if there was a Stumblers Anonymous (SA) organization, nearly three million people around the globe would qualify. The only trouble with a 12-step program of this type is that we’d all show up with our laptops and have a stumble love-in. Talk about failing a self-help program! ;-)

How about you? Are you a stumbler? If so, hit me up and add me as a friend (I have a few places left). I’ll return the favor, stumble your pages, and leave the occasional review.

Happy stumbling!

Addendum: Ray And Laura Are My Secret SU Winners!

Congratulations to Ray of Freshblogger and Laura of Writing Thoughts as these two stumblers were the winners of today’s Secret SU Contest — I blogged ALL of their pages, left comments on their blogs, and left SU comments scattered throughout the blogosphere. Best wishes and let’s hope that this effort prompts some SU juice for you both.

Wow! Thanks. I did experience a surge in traffic.

BTW, I didn’t know that you could come to an end of stumbles for a category.

I’m going to stumble this post for you. It seems like the least that I could do.

  • By Matt, July 18, 2007 @ 1:26 pm

Hi Laura — you are welcome. Just to let you know, the stumbling was done today, not yesterday. So, it looks as if you have some other fans out there.

Check your Wednesday stats on Thursday and you should see the results of my stumbling.

Thank you so much for the comment on my Domestic Divapalooza about the parents letting their young teens and their boyfriends spend the night. The entire things is utterly ridiculous.

I caught your post about Stumbling and thought it would be nice to add you as a friends. Consider me a mutual stumble buddy.

  • By Matt, July 18, 2007 @ 6:49 pm

Hi Angela! We obviously agree about the teen dating subject. Some parents seem to put common sense on hold when it comes to child rearing.

I appreciate the addition on SU — we are now mutual friends.

Secret SU contest? I’m intrigued, what exactly does this involve?

I’ve been on SU for a few months now, gained a small handful of fans, but on the whole my (awesome!) discoveries go unnoticed!

Just added you as a friend.

  • By Matt, July 19, 2007 @ 5:52 am

Hi Andy. The contest was my own, nothing tied in with SU. What I did was pick a couple of mutual friends on StumbleUpon and I stumbled all of their pages. More than two hours and 300 pages later I managed to stumble every single page for Roy and Laura. Exhausting! Fun too.

I have found SU has really helped bring traffic to the site. I spend a lot of time finding new sites. I haven’t really subscribed to the “social” aspects of SU – it seems a bit of a stretch to meet others via this type of site.

    Stumbled ‘ya!

Thanks, Daniel. I stumbled and reviewed your Labrador Retriever site too. Happy stumbling!

Congrats on your 6 months anniversary. I submited an article in the humor section of stumbleupon 2 months ago and it made the buzz section and it the article is still getting 700-1000 visits a day from SU. This is why i love stumble.

  • By Matt, July 19, 2007 @ 12:58 pm

Thanks, Single Grain. That is an amazing return on your traffic for one article. I bet it was that “Internet Addiction” article, right? I stumbled and reviewed that page for you today.

  • By Laura, July 19, 2007 @ 1:23 pm

Thanks again for stumbling my site. It’s very nice to win such a “prize.”

  • By Dave, July 19, 2007 @ 7:15 pm

I’ve been getting the same thing. I always come back a day later and stumble upon has always found more relevant sites for me.

Congrats, Stumble makes for some nice traffic. I am going to try your technique out I found this site in Google btw.
