7 Calls For Submissions!
I mentioned yesterday about the topic of kill fees as pertaining to writing projects. What I didn’t mention were some of the magazines sites actively seeking submissions. So, I will share with you seven of the better paying sites and give to you links to their submission guideline pages. I purposefully left out some of the more difficult to get into publications such as Reader’s Digest and Yankee as your chances for publication with either one is quite low. However, if you want to give them a shot, then stop by their websites for submission information.
7 Good Paying Publications For Article Submission
AARP — Paying a minimum of $1 per word, retirement publication AARP offers one of the highest payouts and largest readership of any magazine.
Entrepreneur — If you are in business for yourself, then you can already identify with this type of publication. I cannot verify payment amount, but $1000 per article has been mentioned as the amount Entrepreneur pays per article.
FamilyFun — This kid friendly magazine pays out $1.25 per word or they will pay you $75 for your idea if they choose to use a member of their writing staff to write the article.
Lonely Planet — I haven’t been able to verify their rates, but I understand that when it comes to travel magazines (online or print) Lonely Planet is a favorite of many.
Sail — Payout averages $800 for a 1500 to 3000 word article. Of course, you must be a boating expert to qualify.
Sierra — If nature is of interest to you, then the Sierra Club magazine is one place to look. 1000-3000 word articles are paid $800 to $3000 plus expenses.
Winding Road — The automotive industry can be a tough nut to crack as feature writers and columnists contribute the bulk of the writings. Still, for $500 to $1500 per article, Winding Road offers some of the better opportunities for automotive freelancers.
Query, Then Wait
Responses to queries can take some time, 6 to 8 weeks is normal with the Sierra magazine. Some publications have one rate for online submission and a separate rate for print. In most cases you should command a higher rate if your work lands in the print version.
