Finding Work, When You Need It

As freelance writers, we all have our dry spells and wouldn’t you know it they seem to occur at the wrong time, everytime? Perhaps you scheduled a vacation and you came back hoping to tackle some projects only to learn that the writing well has dried up. You may begin to wonder if your vacation was worth it…maybe you should have spent that week soliciting new customers.

Better than second guessing ourselves, I find it pays to simply keep one’s pulse on the various jobs which regularly come available. I do have an account with Guru, but it is by no means my chief source of jobs. Instead, if I am not contacted directly by customers through my website, I can visit the following sites and usually find something ranging from one shot assignments to long term business relationships:

About Freelance WritingAnne Wayman updates her list frequently, a list of jobs she culls from various sites including craigslist. Anne also has a nice forum for freelance writers which is a great place for news, information, support, and camaraderie.

Poewar — John Hewitt’s Poewar site incorporates a lot of nifty feeds, mostly from Indeed.com featuring job’s from all over the place. Frequently updated and a great source to go for any kind of work.

Writers Row — I credit Deborah Ng with pulling together one of the most comprehensive lists of freelance writing jobs on the internet. Like Anne Wayman, Deborah puts a lot of time into looking for and sharing opportunities with members of the writing community. Even if you aren’t actively looking for work, I like to visit this site just to find out what is going on in the industry.

Yes, there are bunches of other sites out there that can be useful to you as well. The three mentioned here rank among the tops and are worth being bookmarked for regular visits.
