FTC Knocks Out Malware Peddler
If you have ever downloaded something to your hard drive that later caused you a lot of grief in the form of pop ups and home page manipulations, then you could have been a victim of malware, an insidious program that many computer users don’t even realize has attacked their computer.
Fortunately, the Federal Trade Commission {FTC} is on top of things as they just announced a U.S. District court’s decision shutting down the Media Motor Spyware program pushed by ERG Ventures. You may have thought that you were downloading a nifty screensaver or some cool software for your computer, but after installing the program you found out that unwanted advertising icons had been deposited on your computer. Furthermore, you may unwittingly have become the victim of a company that is now tracking your consumer purchases.
The FTC has set up two ways for consumers who have had experience with these defendants [as noted in their November 13, 2006 press release] to contact the FTC with any information that may be relevant to the FTC?s action. Consumers can send an e-mail to mediamotor@ftc.gov or call 202-326-3504 to leave messages.
Kudos to the FTC!
