Dell Laptop Battery Recall, Take Two

Several weeks ago Dell announced a major recall of scads of its laptop batteries at the urging of Sony, the producer of most Dell batteries. Apparently, these batteries can blow up and seriously injure users. Seeing that I have my PC sitting squarely on my lap, I can only imagine the burns that could be sustained from a Li-ion battery going off.

When I first learned of the problem, I checked by computer out and learned that my model, the 600m, was affected but not my battery lot. Weeks later I learned that Dell was expanding the recall so when the notice came to my attention today, I visited the Dell battery recall site and discovered that my battery was, indeed, being recalled.

I am glad that I will be getting a new battery as the one I now have does not keep the juice. However, I certainly hope that they include a way to send my old battery back to them as disposing batteries in Wake County is a bear: I have to travel ten miles to the county disposal site and they only let you drop off batteries the 3rd saturday of every month! Okay, I’ll stop my crying…

That’s a hassle for consumers, recalls benefit the consumer, but to an extent it inflicts damage on the Dell’s reputation, or any company that issues recalls for that matter.

Dell offers outstanding “standard” prices, but upgrades cost too much, I think they need to get their act together. It seems like majority of their business is from schools, which is a good sum of money, but not something I would want to rely on when the majority of computers purchased are from students and adults for personal use.
